1. Roasting and Leaching

3. Pyrometallurgical Processes

Pyrometallurgical processes involve high-temperature treatments of zinc ores to extract zinc metal. These methods include:

Distillation: Zinc ores are heated in retorts or furnaces to vaporize zinc, which is then condensed and collected as metallic zinc.

Imperial Smelting Process (ISP): ISP involves the reduction of zinc ores with coke or coal in a blast furnace to produce crude zinc oxide, which is then refined through electrolysis or other methods.

4. Electrolytic Refining

Electrolytic refining is a common method used to purify zinc obtained from various extraction processes. In this process:

Zinc obtained from roasting, leaching, or smelting is dissolved in sulfuric acid to form zinc sulfate solution.

The solution is then subjected to electrolysis, where zinc ions are reduced at the cathode to deposit pure zinc metal.

Impurities are left behind in the electrolyte or settle as sludge, resulting in high-purity zinc metal.

5. Recycling

In addition to primary extraction methods, zinc can also be obtained through recycling processes. Scrap zinc from various sources, such as galvanized steel scrap, zinc-containing alloys, and zinc batteries, can be collected and recycled through melting, refining, and purification processes to obtain high-purity zinc metal.
